| Sunday, September 30, 2001 We got dog! We'd been toying with the idea for a while, or rather, Joe has never been more receptive to my idea. Lately I've had lots of trouble sleeping, and with Joe gone pretty much all night because of work, well, the companionship as well as the guardsmanship might help us both feel a little better. I think we might call her Dusty. Since I named Daisy, I told Joe he could pick out the dog's name. Dusty kinda suits her, so we'll see if it sticks. There seems to be just enough black in her tan fur to make her appear "dusty," according to Joe. We got her yesterday at North Shore Animal League--from where most dogs in the tri-state area tend to get adopted. We'd looked in a couple shelters first, but Joe seemed to take to Dusty right away. He's never had a dog before and he also wanted to be able to pick one out. She's a young dog--"between 1 and 3 years." Meanwhile, Daisy's 6. And Daisy's not so sure about Dusty yet. But unlike Princer--the stray cat I attempted to bring home about a month ago--Dusty seems to leave Daisy alone. Dusty and Daisy...geez, is that going to get confusing? I very briefly considered "Katie" for the dog's name. I thought about tossing it out there for consideration, and then I tossed out the idea. Perhaps there's still some hope there. One big joint-responsibility at a time... And speaking of big responsibilities, this dog is much bigger than I anticipated for a dog I'd ever own. I didn't necessarily want a lap dog, but I tend to think I'd prefer a pup closer in size to Daisy compared to one of a really large breed. She seems good, trainable, loves kids. I've just been concerned that big dogs can knock small children down. But she really perked up to a little girl we saw at the pet store after we left North Shore. She was very happy to let the girl, who might have been 7, pet her. She didn't jump--which is a big plus in my book, although she will jump from time to time for me and Joe. She's cute, and very playful. One little kind of big problem: I'm going away in three days. (Not that I'm complaining about this!) We'll need dog-sitting assistance cuz Joe's not sure what his hours will be next week, but in all likelihood, they will be 12-hour shifts again. And we both know that's too long for a dog to be cooped up all alone. We were going to hold off getting a dog 'til I got back from my trip, but, well, we didn't. So here we go...
