A quick recap: I started my most recent online boy-meeting adventures just more than two weeks ago with 12 bachelors with potential. Last week, the list was chopped by half. This week, I've done more chopping--in half again--but I've also added one more.

First, our contenders from the inaurgural round.

John S., 40, with his boat and tech job that he really enjoys, met me out Wednesday night for a quick bite and a few beverages. We've been talking a lot by Instant Messenger. I've only called him once, he's never called me. He seems nice, and has been very sweet. He wants to take me out "on a proper date" where he picks me up and brings me flowers and takes me to dinner and a movie or something, as he explains it. We're going for date No. 2 (or proper date No. 1, as he calls it) on Tuesday. He knows I like to sing karaoke, so he picked a place he also happens to know that I like, and they have karaoke there that particular night. We may just hang there all night and skip the movie. I enjoyed our night out, and he smelled real good, has nice eyes, makes me laugh, but I'm not entirely sure things will go far. Just a feeling I have. He reminds me of Joe in terms of our conversation. That's not a bad thing. But I've wanted more...

Mike, 34, on the opposite coast from me, still sounds great in his still brief e-mails, but we also had the chance to talk by phone. I called him, and he was strangely impressed. Why that is, I'm not exactly sure. We talked nearly an hour about football, basketball--for which he officiates as a hobby--past relationships, traveling, and how we could potentially meet up Feb. 12 when he'll be in my neck of the woods for a game. (He officiates at games throughout the state of Florida.)

Fran, 34, in northern Florida, hasn't been around much this week. We've had time only for some idle chit-chat. I can't tell if that's because we've both been busy or because both of us are simply more interested in other people. We'll see what this week brings, if anything.

Those I'll be glad to be doing without going forward:

James, the guy I had that really great date with last week, puh! I'd called him a couple times, as he suggested I do (but one time out of the blue too, because I was thinking about him). Then he said he'd call me and we'd make plans to go out, but he hasn't called. And I haven't lost a second of sleep over it.

Gary, the guy I bought the house from, who said he was going to write me back, never did write me back. I considered for a brief moment alerting him to the fact that I might be interested, but I decided against it. I may see him again in the future. But he's out of the picture at least for now.

Rob, the separated guy who claimed he was going to reconcile with his wife, well, I think he just said that for my benefit. He still appears as an active member of the dating site.

There've been three or four more guys I've been chatting with a little bit, and a couple weeks ago, they might have been mentioned here. But now, it seems there's just one worth noting.

Jeff: I'm already really, really excited about this guy--except he lives in Japan. I wish I meant that there was a small town in Florida called Japan, but I really do mean Japan the country. I want to say ever so cautiousy that he could well be everything I think I'm looking for. Well, except for the fact that he's so far away. Geography aside, a few lengthy, part silly and mostly intelligent and thoughtful e-mails and a nearly two-hour phone conversation later (he called me!), it's been enough to make me think there's some real potential here. He's 37 and in the U.S. Navy. He's cute, he's smart, he's fun, he's spiritual, he's sweet and he somehow has me doing little happy dances all over the place. I like him. And I do believe I'm going to Japan. Seriously!

As for Joe: We talked only a little bit the whole week, mostly following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. He seems to be doing well and keeping busy. There's honestly nothing else to say here.

Quote Of The Day:

"Wit penetrates; humor envelopes. Wit is a function of verbal intelligence; humor is imagination operating on good nature."
