Who Is Kate?

Kate is my daughter. Kate is my oldest daughter. Kate isn't born yet.

I am NOT pregnant.

I can remember referring to my first-born daughter as Kate since my senior year in college. Maybe it was junior year. Perhaps it was my becoming acquainted to the music of Kate Bush. But frankly, I just like the name Kate. I will likely call my first-born daughter Katie when she's little and let her decide what she prefers to be called when she grows up.

I want to be close to my daughter. I want to be her friend as well as her mother. I reallllly want to be a good mom.

I started Dear Kate on my 30th birthday with good old-fashioned pen and paper. A year later, as I reread some of the things I've written, it's occurred to me that every once in a while I say something that's pretty profound -- something that not just Kate but someone else might find helpful or comforting or useful or insightful. Or silly.

So now it's my hope that, at the very least, the online version of Dear Kate gives my daughter(s) a close look at who I am and how the process of everything we ever grow through shapes who we are right now, and at most, perhaps someone, somewhere might find something I've written leaves a lasting impression in someone's mind. I've always delighted in knowing I can single-handedly make someone's day or positively affect someone's life.

With that, enjoy, and thanks for reading.

Joy and love,
Susan (AKA Perchy ;-) )
